SUMMARY:The Donut King
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales and Greenwich Entertainment for a screening of The Donut King and a panel discussion with Director/Cinematographer/Writer Alice Gu and Writer/Editor Carol Martori moderated by Film Fatales member Stephanie Wang-Breal. \nTed’s story is one of fate\, love\, survival\, hard knocks\, and redemption. It’s the rags to riches story of a refugee escaping Cambodia\, arriving in America in 1975 and building an unlikely multi-million-dollar empire baking America’s favorite pastry\, the donut. Ted sponsored hundreds of visas for incoming refugees and helped them get on their feet teaching them the ways of the donut business. By 1979 he was living the American Dream. But\, in life\, great rise can come with great falls.

SUMMARY:Work Life Balance
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales hosted a discussion about Filmmaking While Parenting with feature film directors Débora Souza Silva (Black Mothers)\, Kestrin Pantera (Mother’s Little Helpers)\, and Renée Wilson (Crepe Covered Sidewalks). Moderated by Film Fatales member Tamara Perkins (Life After Life). \nThis round table discussion will feature filmmakers carving out new ways of building creative life while raising families. Each will share experiences and insight on reimagining creative space and opportunity for parent filmmakers to thrive. Questions that will be explored include: How can the film industry better support working parents? How do we as filmmakers work together to co-create spaces that include families\, respect the unique needs of parents on and off sets\, and see working parents as assets to projects and not liabilities? What role can policy change play in equalizing the industry for women and parents? How does self-care contribute to boosting morale\, mindfulness and sparking and sustaining creativity in working parents. How can we support each other more in this industry and what can filmmakers without kids do to make equitable spaces for their parenting colleagues a reality?

SUMMARY:Laugh Riot
DESCRIPTION:Laugh it off with this panel discussion with comedy directors working in feature films\, television\, late-night\, and even documentary! Film Fatales members Anna Margarita Albelo (Clare at 16)\, Geeta Patel (The Great)\, Kimberly McCullough (The Bold Type)\, and Maureen Bharoocha (Jimmy Kimmel Live) joined us for this engaging conversation\, moderated by Amy French (El Súperstar). \nHear from working comedy directors about how they keep it funny\, both on the screen and behind the scenes\, as we discuss both the craft and business of telling comedic stories. We explore\, too\, the ways that diverse perspectives make for richer comedy\, and explore how jokes are a tool in the fight for social justice. Watch and laugh!

SUMMARY:Filmmaking in the Time of Corona
DESCRIPTION:Adrienne Becker (CEO\, Level Forward)\, Carrie Lozano (Director\, IDA Enterprise Documentary Fund)\, Effie Brown (CEO\, Gamechanger Films)\, and Favianna Rodriguez (Founder\, The Center for Cultural Power) lead this discussion on Covid-era film protocols\, hosted by the Western Independent Media Arts Group and moderated by Darrien Michele Gipson (SAGindie) \nAs the film industry drafted a roadmap to return to production\, marginalized voices became even more marginalized. Small and independent fiction and documentary filmmakers were left unsure how to weather the storm and navigate these new measures. This discussion takes the time to advocate for standards rooted in equity and inclusion and finding a route towards navigating uncertainties\, together. \nWith support from The Sundance Institute and the National Endowment for the Arts.
