SUMMARY:Transcendent Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales and Outfest Fusion hosted a live panel discussion about Authentic Storytelling. We heard from new voices in trans cinema including Fatales Forward fellows M.G. Evangelista (Burning Well) and Seyi Adebanjo (Ọya: Something Happened On The Way To West Africa!) as they discuss their filmmaking process and the power of storytelling as a tool for meaningful cultural change. Despite the increased visibility of trans characters on screen\, opportunities for gender-expansive directors behind the camera are virtually non-existent. By sidelining gender nonconforming voices\, Hollywood is actively contributing to the misrepresentation that leads directly to real-world violence. We need more gender-nonconforming storytellers behind the camera to ensure the authenticity of the stories being told. Moderated by Nava Mau. \nFatales Forward: Trans Stories is a trailblazing fellowship from Film Fatales created to uplift trans and gender diverse filmmakers by fostering an enduring collaborative community of creators. This event is free and open to the public.

Moderated by programmer Stephanie Owens. \nIn 1958\, a young trans woman named Agnes entered a study about sex disorders at UCLA to get the gender-affirming care she needed\, by any means necessary. Her story was long considered to be exceptional until never-before-seen case files of other patients were found in 2017. Directed by Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) and featuring an all-star cast of transgender artists and actors\, Framing Agnes uses re-enactment and genre-blurring storytelling techniques to breathe new life into previously unknown people who redefined gender in the midcentury. Featuring Angelica Ross\, Jen Richards\, Zackary Drucker\, Silas Howard\, Max Wolf Valerio\, and Stephen Ira.

SUMMARY:Kindred Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Author and screenwriter Namina Forna (The Gilded Ones) and genre filmmaker Zandashé Brown (Blood Runs Down) joined us for a discussion\, moderated by Film Fatales member Tchaiko Omawale (Solace)\, about Black Women in Genre. \nBlack women have had a significant impact in genre over the years\, with a recent renaissance of novels by Black female writers being adapted for the screen. Genre is often used to explore taboo topics and socio-cultural perspectives from a new angle. Come learn from filmmakers creating in this space. What are their inspirations? What stories do they want to tell and why?

SUMMARY:Creating Your Own Work
DESCRIPTION:Revisit this discussion about Creating Your Own Work with episodic television and feature film writer/directors Isidora Marras (I Am Not Lorena) Jennifer Arnold (Shameless)\, Marta Cunningham (Fear The Walking Dead)\, Susan Youssef (Marjoun and the Flying Headscarf)\, and Vanessa Parise (Charmed). Moderated by Meera Menon (Equity). \nThis round table discussion explored how we support each other’s unique voices to create our own work. During Covid\, our group of director friends started a writing circle that has changed the way we approach our careers. We are working together to support each other’s unique voices\, to create truly individual and inspired work\, not the stories we’ve heard before. Covid has forced us to slow down. We’ve found a silver lining in creating a new space to delve deep and listen to our inner storytellers\, and help each other to tell our stories in the most impactful and engaging ways. As we develop our individual careers\, we believe success comes from working together.
