SUMMARY:Changing The Ratio Emmys
DESCRIPTION:We had a blast at our in-person cocktail reception in Hollywood celebrating all of the Film Fatales members nominated for Emmys this year. There were some light bites\, great music\, and plenty of good cheer to go around. Co-hosted by AWFC\, Film Fatales\, ReFrame and WIF with support from Scriptation. \nChanging the Ratio is a cross-disciplinary networking event for industry professionals celebrating women and gender expansive filmmakers and below-the-line crew. As the Emmys are approaching\, our focus is to shine a light on some of the amazing projects and their creators from this year as we come together for a night of industry conversation and networking with professional filmmakers\, crew\, and influential industry decision-makers. \nWith the current underrepresentation of women and non-binary creatives across technical and craft categories – from directors to composers\, cinematographers\, VFX\, and editors – our collective goal with this event is to carve out and occupy shared space. As film award season is underway\, this event will highlight members across our organizations who have the potential to be nominated and considered for awards. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Building Connections
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members gathered for a virtual social mixer with feature film and episodic television directors around the world. We had a community discussion around inclusive language\, authentic authorship and ethical filmmaking practices as we continue to work towards decolonizing the film industry. We stand in solidarity against systemic racism and gender-based violence as we make space to listen to each other and build deeper connections within our community.  \nWe began with a grounding ritual and group conversation led by co-hosts Dewi Marquis (Ara Untamed)\, Chelsea Hernandez (Building The American Dream) Donna Wheeler (Death of a Saleswoman)\, and Rijaa Nadeem (Scandal Made me Famous)\, before dividing up into smaller discussion circles to deepen our relationships based on a series of guided prompts.

SUMMARY:Fatales Forward Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Thanks for joining Film Fatales for an online showcase with the fellows from the Fatales Forward mentorship program: Brit Fryer\, Raven Two Feathers\, Rey Tang\, Silvia Del Carmen Castaños\, and Ryan Rox. Moderated by Nava Mau. \nWith support from the NEA\, Fatales Forward is an innovative fellowship for emerging filmmakers working on their debut or sophomore feature films about the trans experience. The program consists of three months of one-on-one mentorship with established trans filmmakers\, a virtual Career Advancement Intensive\, creative peer to peer workshops\, and ongoing artist development support. \nThe Fatales Forward Fellowship was launched when trans visibility in the media was at an all time high and representation behind the camera was almost non-existent. As we all know\, the situation is even more dire today. We need to move beyond visibility towards true acceptance and celebration. That journey begins with authentic authorship and trans and nonbinary creators telling our own stories. We hope to create pockets of joy and creativity through our work together and look forward to celebrating this year’s fellows as they move boldly forward into the future.

SUMMARY:Transcendent Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales and Outfest Fusion hosted a live panel discussion about Authentic Storytelling. We heard from new voices in trans cinema including Fatales Forward fellows M.G. Evangelista (Burning Well) and Seyi Adebanjo (Ọya: Something Happened On The Way To West Africa!) as they discuss their filmmaking process and the power of storytelling as a tool for meaningful cultural change. Despite the increased visibility of trans characters on screen\, opportunities for gender-expansive directors behind the camera are virtually non-existent. By sidelining gender nonconforming voices\, Hollywood is actively contributing to the misrepresentation that leads directly to real-world violence. We need more gender-nonconforming storytellers behind the camera to ensure the authenticity of the stories being told. Moderated by Nava Mau. \nFatales Forward: Trans Stories is a trailblazing fellowship from Film Fatales created to uplift trans and gender diverse filmmakers by fostering an enduring collaborative community of creators. This event is free and open to the public.
