SUMMARY:Episodic Shadowing
DESCRIPTION:Join Film Fatales online for an in-depth Episodic Television Directing Class led by prolific television director Bethany Rooney\, whose credits include more than 250 episodes of prime-time narrative shows\, most recently Law & Order\, Chicago PD\, Law & Order SVU\, The Rookie\, Criminal Minds Evolution\, and Chicago Med. \nEight emerging episodic directors were selected to participate live in this highly interactive class as virtual shadows including Alycia Cooper\, Elaine Del Valle\, Iram Parveen Bilal\, Julia Weisberg Cortés\, Kate Tsang\, Maya Table\, Nikki Taylor-Roberts\, and Stacie Hawkins. Filmmakers of all experience levels are invited to audit the class by reading the script\, observing the live class\, and watching the recording. \nLearn how to prep from a working TV director! Episodic directing is such a multi-layered job with unique scripts and visual styles\, including different staff\, cast and crew in every episode. In this interactive workshop\, you will explore ways to solidify your prep so that you can show up ready for success. Bethany will use a script from a recent episode of Network Television she has directed to walk you through scene blocking\, shot listing and more.  \nBethany co-created two of the industry’s leading diversity director training programs: Warner Bros. and the DGA Director Development Initiative. She co-wrote (with Mary Lou Belli) the industry’s preeminent directing craft textbook\, Directors Tell the Story\, which Rooney uses when she teaches the WB Access Craft Intensive and the NBC-Universal Launch program. \nWith support from event partners Black Film & TV Collective\, Chicana Directors Initiative\, Free the Work\, The Gotham\, Latino Filmmakers Network\, NYWIFT\, and Women In Film.

SUMMARY:Consider This
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales for an online discussion about how to launch a successful awards campaign with limited resources. \nWe heard from filmmakers who have produced feature films that have been nominated for Spirit Awards\, Gotham Awards\, and Academy Awards. Panelists included producers Elizabeth Woodward (SXSW winning Another Body)\, and Nikkia Moulterie (Gotham and Spirit nominated Nanny). Moderated by Film Fatales member Liz Sargent (Take Me Home). \nAwards matter in raising the visibility of films for a mainstream audience\, introducing new cultural perspectives\, and elevating films seeking distribution. In the past 95 years\, only three women have won an Oscar for Best Director and only seven have been nominated. As Variety recently reported\, “Every year\, the race for the Oscar gets more expensive and less inclusive.” Campaigns for Spirit Awards and Gotham Awards are similarly challenging. Filmmakers must figure out how to independently cover their marketing costs and get their films seen by voters and audiences alike. We learned the nuts and bolts of what it takes to run an independent awards campaign in this round table conversation. \nWith support from event partners Pano Network\, The Gotham\, and NYWIFT. Thank you for coming!

SUMMARY:Fatales Forward Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Thanks for joining Film Fatales for an online showcase with the fellows from the Fatales Forward mentorship program: Brit Fryer\, Raven Two Feathers\, Rey Tang\, Silvia Del Carmen Castaños\, and Ryan Rox. Moderated by Nava Mau. \nWith support from the NEA\, Fatales Forward is an innovative fellowship for emerging filmmakers working on their debut or sophomore feature films about the trans experience. The program consists of three months of one-on-one mentorship with established trans filmmakers\, a virtual Career Advancement Intensive\, creative peer to peer workshops\, and ongoing artist development support. \nThe Fatales Forward Fellowship was launched when trans visibility in the media was at an all time high and representation behind the camera was almost non-existent. As we all know\, the situation is even more dire today. We need to move beyond visibility towards true acceptance and celebration. That journey begins with authentic authorship and trans and nonbinary creators telling our own stories. We hope to create pockets of joy and creativity through our work together and look forward to celebrating this year’s fellows as they move boldly forward into the future.

SUMMARY:Fest and Furious
DESCRIPTION:Revisit this Film Fatales online workshop about maximizing your film festival strategy led by Kathy Susca and Jeffrey Winter from The Film Collaborative. Moderated by Lagueria Davis (Director/Producer\, Black Barbie: A Documentary). Film festivals can be elusive and confounding. Three audience members were invited to share their current projects to be used as a case study for live feedback during the webinar. SUMMARY:Transcendent Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales and Outfest Fusion hosted a live panel discussion about Authentic Storytelling. We heard from new voices in trans cinema including Fatales Forward fellows M.G. Evangelista (Burning Well) and Seyi Adebanjo (Ọya: Something Happened On The Way To West Africa!) as they discuss their filmmaking process and the power of storytelling as a tool for meaningful cultural change. Despite the increased visibility of trans characters on screen\, opportunities for gender-expansive directors behind the camera are virtually non-existent. By sidelining gender nonconforming voices\, Hollywood is actively contributing to the misrepresentation that leads directly to real-world violence. We need more gender-nonconforming storytellers behind the camera to ensure the authenticity of the stories being told. Moderated by Nava Mau. \nFatales Forward: Trans Stories is a trailblazing fellowship from Film Fatales created to uplift trans and gender diverse filmmakers by fostering an enduring collaborative community of creators. This event is free and open to the public.
