SUMMARY:SXSW Filmmaker Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales and New America’s Entertainment Initiative hosted an intimate private brunch during the SXSW Film Festival highlighting a conversation centered around gender\, work\, family\, care and representation on and off screen. We each have lived experiences\, family backgrounds\, and hopes and fears about the future that shape our own views about navigating work\, family\, and care—yet American culture often leaves us feeling alone and unsupported. People often feel that the challenges of managing jobs and family or personal needs are private and ours alone to bear. Yet there is joy and strength in building community\, recognizing shared struggles\, and engaging in discussion about a desire for change on screen and in life.  \nThis candid discussion was led by Alyse Walsh (Baby/Girls)\, Luchina Fisher (The Dads) and Vicki Shabo (New America) about why visibility and representation matter\, and how art can change culture and policy. Followed by a sit-down brunch for Film Fatales members attending the fest. We look forward to seeing you next time!

Through their experiences\, we explored how one can move the needle on whose story gets to be told and what you can do to find funding for your films!

SUMMARY:Framing Agnes
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales and BFFoundation for a discussion with the creative team behind Framing Agnes fresh off their Sundance premiere. Speakers include director Chase Joynt\, (cinematographer) Aubree Bernier-Clarke\, (participant) Jules Gill-Peterson\, (writer) Morgan M. Page\, and Samantha Curley (producer). Moderated by programmer Stephanie Owens. \nIn 1958\, a young trans woman named Agnes entered a study about sex disorders at UCLA to get the gender-affirming care she needed\, by any means necessary. Her story was long considered to be exceptional until never-before-seen case files of other patients were found in 2017. Directed by Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) and featuring an all-star cast of transgender artists and actors\, Framing Agnes uses re-enactment and genre-blurring storytelling techniques to breathe new life into previously unknown people who redefined gender in the midcentury. Featuring Angelica Ross\, Jen Richards\, Zackary Drucker\, Silas Howard\, Max Wolf Valerio\, and Stephen Ira.

SUMMARY:Prisma
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales\, Prism\, and Cinemarket hosted a Virtual Showcase and Showcase during the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. \nFilmmakers Emily Cohen Ibañez (Fruits of Labor)\, Raquel Cepeda (La Madrina: The Savage Life of Lorine Padilla)\, and Larissa Lam (Far East Deep South) shared their latest projects available for acquisition during the Cannes Film Festival and discuss their unique distribution journeys. This event was moderated by Concordia University professor Dipti Gupta. \nFilm Fatales\, Cinemarket\, and Prism came together to host PRISMA\, a virtual showcase and panel discussion to honor the work of filmmakers of all marginalized genders. What are the challenges women and gender nonconforming filmmakers face in finding distribution in Europe? Can we break down barriers between the international market and US-based filmmakers of color? Join us for a conversation about the state of the industry and explore the Virtual Market of feature films available for acquisition throughout the festival.\nThe Selection Committee included Alice Riva (Visions du Réel)\, Dayan Kodua (Actress)\, Francesca Tiberi (True Colours)\, Klaudia Malota (Lower Silesian Film Center)\, Lidia Damatto (More Than)\, Manuela Buono (Slingshot Films)\, Maral Mustafazade (Filmotor)\, and Rita Stanelyte (Litauisches Kino Goes Berlin\, Mata Hari Comm).

SUMMARY:Tales From the Field
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining us for a panel discussion with Film Fatales members fresh off their Sundance premieres including Ciara Lacy (This is the Way We Rise)\, Elizabeth Lo (Stray)\, Jamila Wignot (Ailey)\, and Jane Schoenbrun (We’re All Going to the World’s Fair). \nThis conversation centered around the journey from project inception to festival premiere and beyond. Where do you find inspiration? How do you identify creative collaborators? How do you build an audience? What goes into the decision to release a film during a pandemic? What are the various paths to distribution in the current landscape? What is it like being a filmmaker in these unusual times? We delved into an in-depth conversation with talented feature film directors in the thick of it all.
