SUMMARY:Documentary Development
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales joined DocLands and DOC NYC for a panel discussion about Documentary Development with Daresha Kyi (Mama Bears) and Iliana Sosa (What We Leave Behind)\, moderated by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan (Águilas). \nRewatch to listen to documentary filmmakers straight off their SXSW premiers discuss their creative and practical processes for developing documentary features. How do you choose a compelling subject and see it through with authenticity\, creativity\, and sensitivity? Where do you find funding and how do you build trust with your subjects and audience? How do we address implicit and explicit biases and make efforts to decolonize docs? We learned how to take action on our inspirations from these accomplished artists.

SUMMARY:Framing Agnes
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales and BFFoundation for a discussion with the creative team behind Framing Agnes fresh off their Sundance premiere. Speakers include director Chase Joynt\, (cinematographer) Aubree Bernier-Clarke\, (participant) Jules Gill-Peterson\, (writer) Morgan M. Page\, and Samantha Curley (producer). Moderated by programmer Stephanie Owens. \nIn 1958\, a young trans woman named Agnes entered a study about sex disorders at UCLA to get the gender-affirming care she needed\, by any means necessary. Her story was long considered to be exceptional until never-before-seen case files of other patients were found in 2017. Directed by Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) and featuring an all-star cast of transgender artists and actors\, Framing Agnes uses re-enactment and genre-blurring storytelling techniques to breathe new life into previously unknown people who redefined gender in the midcentury. Featuring Angelica Ross\, Jen Richards\, Zackary Drucker\, Silas Howard\, Max Wolf Valerio\, and Stephen Ira.

SUMMARY:Transgender Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members participated in this interactive inclusion workshop hosted by GLAAD and Scott Turner Schofield (Founder of Speaking of Transgender)\, exploring the topic of what it means to be transgender and the past\, present\, and future of trans media representation. \nStarting with an overview of what it means to be transgender and non-binary\, along with need-to-know terminology\, the presentation examines stereotypes about trans people and the real world consequences of those. Discussions follow of the history of transgender representation in film and television\, the current state\, and how to improve trans representation in the future\, including best practices for casting authentically and including trans people behind the camera. Viewing provides a thorough understanding of how GLAAD can be a resource to content creators in telling authentic and accurate trans stories that truly reflect the world around us and accelerate acceptance through culture change.

SUMMARY:Kindred Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Author and screenwriter Namina Forna (The Gilded Ones) and genre filmmaker Zandashé Brown (Blood Runs Down) joined us for a discussion\, moderated by Film Fatales member Tchaiko Omawale (Solace)\, about Black Women in Genre. \nBlack women have had a significant impact in genre over the years\, with a recent renaissance of novels by Black female writers being adapted for the screen. Genre is often used to explore taboo topics and socio-cultural perspectives from a new angle. Come learn from filmmakers creating in this space. What are their inspirations? What stories do they want to tell and why?

SUMMARY:Born Curious
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales for an interactive workshop about applying for an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Film Grant with Rebecca Katz\, the current Sloan Consultant at Sundance Institute and Film Independent. Moderated by Film Fatales member and Sloan grant recipient Annie Howell (Co-director\, Small Beautifully Moving Parts). \nLaunched in 1996\, the Sloan Film Program aims to influence the next generation of filmmakers to tackle science and technology themes and characters\, increase visibility for feature films that depict this subject matter\, and develop new work that can be produced and released theatrically. Sloan’s Film program has awarded grants to over 700 film projects from some of the nation’s most innovative filmmakers and has created a film development pipeline of multiple program partners. Over the past 15 years\, the Foundation has partnered with six of the top film schools in the country–including AFI\, Carnegie Mellon\, Columbia\, NYU\, UCLA\, and USC– and established annual awards in screenwriting and film production. The Foundation also supports artist development programs at the Sundance Institute\, the Tribeca Film Institute\, the Black List\, SFFILM\, the Athena Film Festival\, and Film Independent.

SUMMARY:Cast to the Future
DESCRIPTION:Rewatch this panel discussion about inclusive casting with casting consultant Ava Rigelhaupt (Two Countries)\, filmmaker Alaa Zabara (Salahy) and talent agent Gail Williamson (KMR Talent). Moderated by Film Fatales member Khadifa Wong (Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance). \nThe question of who should tell stories of marginalized and underrepresented voices has been much discussed\, sometimes leading to heated stances over artistic freedom\, cultural appropriation and accusations of censorship. And yet\, disabled stories are sorely lacking in representation. Twenty percent of people have a disability while on-screen representation hovers around three percent\, with no meaningful change in the last five years. While more attention is being paid to hiring disabled actors for disabled roles\, what about opportunities for disabled actors to play nondisabled characters? And who should be writing these roles? What are best practices for inclusive casting and accessible sets?

SUMMARY:Strike While the Iron Is Hot
DESCRIPTION:Is all money created equal? When is the right (and wrong) time to apply for grant funding? How do investors work? We held an informal fireside chat about film financing with Tribeca Film Institute’s former Director of Scripted Programs Bryce Norbitz and filmmaker Dyana Winkler where no question is off limits as we look honestly at how savvy filmmakers have to be in order to get our films funded and made. SUMMARY:Whose Story?
DESCRIPTION:Members of Film Fatales and A-Doc joined together for a free private networking mixer for filmmakers of all backgrounds. \nThank you for joining us in a conversation exploring authentic authorship and the importance of the filmmaker’s point of view. How are filmmakers getting their films made in the current climate? What is our responsibility as artists in light of the disturbing rise in anti-Asian American hate crimes? How can we expand the language of storytelling to be more inclusive? \nWe began with a guided group discussion led by Film Fatales and A-Doc members Eunice Lau and Theresa Loong before dividing up into breakout groups for meaningful conversations based on a series of guided prompts.

SUMMARY:Love is Love
DESCRIPTION:We held a discussion about Queer Love Stories with Film Fatales members Marion Hill (Ma Belle\, My Beauty)\, Mari Walker (See You Then)\, and Natalia Leite (Bare). \nThe Queer Cinema movement has been politically and aesthetically innovative\, growing to include an entire generation of queer artists\, filmmakers\, and activists. SUMMARY:Accessible Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Members of Film Fatales and FWD-Doc gathered together for a private mixer for filmmakers of all genders\, disabilities\, and backgrounds. We met creative collaborators and shared details about our latest passion projects. \nMissing the company of like-minded artists? Curious about inclusive language and best practices? How do we break through barriers to share our stories with the world? How have each of us\, individually and collectively\, worked towards raising ourselves up\, and how do we bring others with us? This event was for you! We began with a group “getting to know you” exercise\, facilitated by Day Al-Mohamed (The Invalid Corps)\, Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp)\, and StormMiguel Florez (The Whistle) before dividing up into smaller discussion circles for meaningful conversations based on a series of guided prompts.
