SUMMARY:Documentary Development Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales joined DocLands and DOC NYC for a panel discussion about Documentary Development with Daresha Kyi (Mama Bears) and Iliana Sosa (What We Leave Behind)\, moderated by Kristy Guevara-Flanagan (Águilas). \nRewatch to listen to documentary filmmakers straight off their SXSW premiers discuss their creative and practical processes for developing documentary features. How do you choose a compelling subject and see it through with authenticity\, creativity\, and sensitivity? Where do you find funding and how do you build trust with your subjects and audience? How do we address implicit and explicit biases and make efforts to decolonize docs? We learned how to take action on our inspirations from these accomplished artists.

SUMMARY:Framing Agnes Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales and BFFoundation for a discussion with the creative team behind Framing Agnes fresh off their Sundance premiere. Speakers include director Chase Joynt\, (cinematographer) Aubree Bernier-Clarke\, (participant) Jules Gill-Peterson\, (writer) Morgan M. Page\, and Samantha Curley (producer). Moderated by programmer Stephanie Owens. \nIn 1958\, a young trans woman named Agnes entered a study about sex disorders at UCLA to get the gender-affirming care she needed\, by any means necessary. Her story was long considered to be exceptional until never-before-seen case files of other patients were found in 2017. Directed by Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) and featuring an all-star cast of transgender artists and actors\, Framing Agnes uses re-enactment and genre-blurring storytelling techniques to breathe new life into previously unknown people who redefined gender in the midcentury. Featuring Angelica Ross\, Jen Richards\, Zackary Drucker\, Silas Howard\, Max Wolf Valerio\, and Stephen Ira.

SUMMARY:Through the Lens Members
DESCRIPTION:Thanks for joining Film Fatales for a discussion about Acting in Your Own Film with multi-hyphenate creators Erica Fae (To Keep The Light)\, Rain Valdez (Razor Tongue\, Lit Girl)\, Tamara Bass (Baby Boy\, If Not Now\, When?)\, and Sujata Day (Insecure\, Definition Please). \nFor many filmmakers\, directing themselves is the scariest and most daunting part of a project. In this session\, we learned from four multi-hyphenate creators about how to direct your own film or television episode while also acting in it. What does it mean to juggle wearing different hats on the same project? This round table discussion offered real world advice for navigating working on both sides of the camera.

SUMMARY:The Path Forward Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members Diane Fraher (The Heart Stays)\, Geeta Malik (India Sweets and Spices)\, Nancy Kates (Regarding Susan Sontag) and Saila Kariat (The Valley) lead this engaging discussion on directing your second feature. \nMany filmmakers find that\, even with the wealth of knowledge they have acquired in the process of realizing their first feature\, the second one is even more challenging. These experienced filmmakers explore the inspiration and obstacles they faced in making their second feature and discuss key issues such as figuring out which project to pursue\, finding funding\, getting talent\, and bridging the often large time gap between your first and second feature. Watch and consider what your own path forward might be!

SUMMARY:Transgender Storytelling Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members participated in this interactive inclusion workshop hosted by GLAAD and Scott Turner Schofield (Founder of Speaking of Transgender)\, exploring the topic of what it means to be transgender and the past\, present\, and future of trans media representation. \nStarting with an overview of what it means to be transgender and non-binary\, along with need-to-know terminology\, the presentation examines stereotypes about trans people and the real world consequences of those. Discussions follow of the history of transgender representation in film and television\, the current state\, and how to improve trans representation in the future\, including best practices for casting authentically and including trans people behind the camera. Viewing provides a thorough understanding of how GLAAD can be a resource to content creators in telling authentic and accurate trans stories that truly reflect the world around us and accelerate acceptance through culture change.

SUMMARY:Ghouls Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Something spooktacular is brewing! As the days are growing longer and the darkness creeps in\, we joined together for a spooky filmmaker mixer to stir the cauldron of ideas with your fellow creatives.  We began with a group discussion and party games led by Film Fatales members Madeleine Olnek (Wild Nights with Emily) and Natasha Kermani (Lucky) before dividing up into smaller groups for intimate conversations based on a series of guided prompts. This private mixer for film fatales members was not recorded to create safe space for participation. Thanks for joining us!

SUMMARY:Kindred Spirits Members
DESCRIPTION:Author and screenwriter Namina Forna (The Gilded Ones) and genre filmmaker Zandashé Brown (Blood Runs Down) joined us for a discussion\, moderated by Film Fatales member Tchaiko Omawale (Solace)\, about Black Women in Genre. \nBlack women have had a significant impact in genre over the years\, with a recent renaissance of novels by Black female writers being adapted for the screen. Genre is often used to explore taboo topics and socio-cultural perspectives from a new angle. Come learn from filmmakers creating in this space. What are their inspirations? What stories do they want to tell and why?
