SUMMARY:The Path Forward
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members Diane Fraher (The Heart Stays)\, Geeta Malik (India Sweets and Spices)\, Nancy Kates (Regarding Susan Sontag) and Saila Kariat (The Valley) lead this engaging discussion on directing your second feature. \nMany filmmakers find that\, even with the wealth of knowledge they have acquired in the process of realizing their first feature\, the second one is even more challenging. These experienced filmmakers explore the inspiration and obstacles they faced in making their second feature and discuss key issues such as figuring out which project to pursue\, finding funding\, getting talent\, and bridging the often large time gap between your first and second feature. Watch and consider what your own path forward might be!

SUMMARY:Transgender Storytelling Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales members participated in this interactive inclusion workshop hosted by GLAAD and Scott Turner Schofield (Founder of Speaking of Transgender)\, exploring the topic of what it means to be transgender and the past\, present\, and future of trans media representation. \nStarting with an overview of what it means to be transgender and non-binary\, along with need-to-know terminology\, the presentation examines stereotypes about trans people and the real world consequences of those. Discussions follow of the history of transgender representation in film and television\, the current state\, and how to improve trans representation in the future\, including best practices for casting authentically and including trans people behind the camera. Viewing provides a thorough understanding of how GLAAD can be a resource to content creators in telling authentic and accurate trans stories that truly reflect the world around us and accelerate acceptance through culture change.

SUMMARY:Ghouls Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Something spooktacular is brewing! As the days are growing longer and the darkness creeps in\, we joined together for a spooky filmmaker mixer to stir the cauldron of ideas with your fellow creatives.  We began with a group discussion and party games led by Film Fatales members Madeleine Olnek (Wild Nights with Emily) and Natasha Kermani (Lucky) before dividing up into smaller groups for intimate conversations based on a series of guided prompts. This private mixer for film fatales members was not recorded to create safe space for participation. Thanks for joining us!

SUMMARY:Kindred Spirits Members
DESCRIPTION:Author and screenwriter Namina Forna (The Gilded Ones) and genre filmmaker Zandashé Brown (Blood Runs Down) joined us for a discussion\, moderated by Film Fatales member Tchaiko Omawale (Solace)\, about Black Women in Genre. \nBlack women have had a significant impact in genre over the years\, with a recent renaissance of novels by Black female writers being adapted for the screen. Genre is often used to explore taboo topics and socio-cultural perspectives from a new angle. Come learn from filmmakers creating in this space. What are their inspirations? What stories do they want to tell and why?

SUMMARY:Born Curious Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales for an interactive workshop about applying for an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Film Grant with Rebecca Katz\, the current Sloan Consultant at Sundance Institute and Film Independent. Moderated by Film Fatales member and Sloan grant recipient Annie Howell (Co-director\, Small Beautifully Moving Parts). \nLaunched in 1996\, the Sloan Film Program aims to influence the next generation of filmmakers to tackle science and technology themes and characters\, increase visibility for feature films that depict this subject matter\, and develop new work that can be produced and released theatrically. Sloan’s Film program has awarded grants to over 700 film projects from some of the nation’s most innovative filmmakers and has created a film development pipeline of multiple program partners. Over the past 15 years\, the Foundation has partnered with six of the top film schools in the country–including AFI\, Carnegie Mellon\, Columbia\, NYU\, UCLA\, and USC– and established annual awards in screenwriting and film production. The Foundation also supports artist development programs at the Sundance Institute\, the Tribeca Film Institute\, the Black List\, SFFILM\, the Athena Film Festival\, and Film Independent.

SUMMARY:Cast to the Future Members
DESCRIPTION:Rewatch this panel discussion about inclusive casting with casting consultant Ava Rigelhaupt (Two Countries)\, filmmaker Alaa Zabara (Salahy) and talent agent Gail Williamson (KMR Talent). Moderated by Film Fatales member Khadifa Wong (Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance). \nThe question of who should tell stories of marginalized and underrepresented voices has been much discussed\, sometimes leading to heated stances over artistic freedom\, cultural appropriation and accusations of censorship. And yet\, disabled stories are sorely lacking in representation. Twenty percent of people have a disability while on-screen representation hovers around three percent\, with no meaningful change in the last five years. While more attention is being paid to hiring disabled actors for disabled roles\, what about opportunities for disabled actors to play nondisabled characters? And who should be writing these roles? What are best practices for inclusive casting and accessible sets?

SUMMARY:Story Metamorphosis Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales and WIF for a case study on adaptation with the creative minds behind the hit Netflix show Shadow and Bone. We’ll explore the steps of translating a written work to the screen with Series Writer Leigh Bardugo\, Producer Christina Strain\, and Executive Producer Shelley Meals. Moderated by Film Fatales and WIF member Drew Denny. \nTogether we learned more about the ins-and-outs of developing movies and television that respect the original work while rebuilding it in a new medium. This conversation tackled the things you need to know about the adaptation process when working with pre-existing IP like books\, documentaries\, short films\, podcasts\, articles\, and more. If you’re the creator of an original IP or are a filmmaker with questions about the roles of production companies and distributors\, this event was for you!

SUMMARY:Strike While the Iron Is Hot Members
DESCRIPTION:Is all money created equal? When is the right (and wrong) time to apply for grant funding? How do investors work? We held an informal fireside chat about film financing with Tribeca Film Institute’s former Director of Scripted Programs Bryce Norbitz and filmmaker Dyana Winkler where no question is off limits as we look honestly at how savvy filmmakers have to be in order to get our films funded and made. DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales held a discussion about filming in conflict zones with documentary filmmakers Amber Fares (Speed Sisters)\, Elizabeth Mirzaei (3 Songs for Benazir)\, and Sedika Mojadidi (Facing the Dragon) as they share advice on the strategies\, logistics and hazards of filming in daunting locations. How do they make authentic films that resonate with the wider world? What is it like to work in a conflict zone\, both technically and emotionally? How do they keep their stories intimate and their subjects safe? How can films shift culture and create tangible and lasting change?

SUMMARY:Whose Story?
DESCRIPTION:Members of Film Fatales and A-Doc joined together for a free private networking mixer for filmmakers of all backgrounds. \nThank you for joining us in a conversation exploring authentic authorship and the importance of the filmmaker’s point of view. How are filmmakers getting their films made in the current climate? What is our responsibility as artists in light of the disturbing rise in anti-Asian American hate crimes? SUMMARY:Love is Love Members
DESCRIPTION:We held a discussion about Queer Love Stories with Film Fatales members Marion Hill (Ma Belle\, My Beauty)\, Mari Walker (See You Then)\, and Natalia Leite (Bare). \nThe Queer Cinema movement has been politically and aesthetically innovative\, growing to include an entire generation of queer artists\, filmmakers\, and activists. What does this look like in today’s landscape? How has onscreen representation evolved alongside our understanding of gender? How does identity intersect with art? Is there such a thing as a “Queer Aesthetic”? Filmmakers telling stories of unconventional queer romances discuss their films\, their creative process\, and various gazes.

SUMMARY:In Your Words Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales for a discussion about Writing for Television with C.A. Johnson (Filthy Rich)\, Dr. David Renaud (The Good Doctor)\, and Marilyn Fu (The Baxters). Moderated by Film Fatales member Jenna Laurenzo (Lez Bomb). \nThis round table conversation with episodic television writers explored their creative process and how they are making waves in the industry. Where did they find their style and how do they maintain it? What are the challenges to breaking into television?  What happens day to day in a writer’s room? How can we uplift marginalized voices so there are more seats at the table? Where do we go from here?

SUMMARY:Language of Light Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales for a discussion about the Language of Light with cinematographers Nancy Schreiber (P-Valley)\, Rose Bush (Colette)\, and Vatsala Goel (Aggie). Moderated by Film Fatales member Chithra Jeyaram (Foreign Puzzle). \nWe heard from working cinematographers who are forging a path with their uniquely creative visions. We learned where they find inspiration\, how they cultivate their style\, and how they maintain it in the fast-paced and ever-changing landscape of the film industry. Do bold choices help you stand out or are they something you have to fight to hold onto? How do you maintain your artistic integrity? How do cinematographers like to communicate with directors? All these questions and more were answered!

SUMMARY:Accessible Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Members of Film Fatales and FWD-Doc gathered together for a private mixer for filmmakers of all genders\, disabilities\, and backgrounds. We met creative collaborators and shared details about our latest passion projects. \nMissing the company of like-minded artists? Curious about inclusive language and best practices? How do we break through barriers to share our stories with the world? How have each of us\, individually and collectively\, worked towards raising ourselves up\, and how do we bring others with us? This event was for you! We began with a group “getting to know you” exercise\, facilitated by Day Al-Mohamed (The Invalid Corps)\, Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp)\, and StormMiguel Florez (The Whistle) before dividing up into smaller discussion circles for meaningful conversations based on a series of guided prompts.
