SUMMARY:Story Metamorphosis Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales and WIF for a case study on adaptation with the creative minds behind the hit Netflix show Shadow and Bone. We’ll explore the steps of translating a written work to the screen with Series Writer Leigh Bardugo\, Producer Christina Strain\, and Executive Producer Shelley Meals. Moderated by Film Fatales and WIF member Drew Denny. \nTogether we learned more about the ins-and-outs of developing movies and television that respect the original work while rebuilding it in a new medium. This conversation tackled the things you need to know about the adaptation process when working with pre-existing IP like books\, documentaries\, short films\, podcasts\, articles\, and more. If you’re the creator of an original IP or are a filmmaker with questions about the roles of production companies and distributors\, this event was for you!

SUMMARY:Strike While the Iron Is Hot Members
DESCRIPTION:Is all money created equal? When is the right (and wrong) time to apply for grant funding? How do investors work? We held an informal fireside chat about film financing with Tribeca Film Institute’s former Director of Scripted Programs Bryce Norbitz and filmmaker Dyana Winkler where no question is off limits as we look honestly at how savvy filmmakers have to be in order to get our films funded and made. Moderated by Film Fatales member Sharmila Ray.

SUMMARY:On the Front Lines Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales held a discussion about filming in conflict zones with documentary filmmakers Amber Fares (Speed Sisters)\, Elizabeth Mirzaei (3 Songs for Benazir)\, and Sedika Mojadidi (Facing the Dragon) as they share advice on the strategies\, logistics and hazards of filming in daunting locations. How do they make authentic films that resonate with the wider world? What is it like to work in a conflict zone\, both technically and emotionally? How do they keep their stories intimate and their subjects safe? How can films shift culture and create tangible and lasting change?

SUMMARY:Whose Story?
DESCRIPTION:Members of Film Fatales and A-Doc joined together for a free private networking mixer for filmmakers of all backgrounds. \nThank you for joining us in a conversation exploring authentic authorship and the importance of the filmmaker’s point of view. How are filmmakers getting their films made in the current climate? What is our responsibility as artists in light of the disturbing rise in anti-Asian American hate crimes? How can we expand the language of storytelling to be more inclusive? \nWe began with a guided group discussion led by Film Fatales and A-Doc members Eunice Lau and Theresa Loong before dividing up into breakout groups for meaningful conversations based on a series of guided prompts.

SUMMARY:Love is Love Members
DESCRIPTION:We held a discussion about Queer Love Stories with Film Fatales members Marion Hill (Ma Belle\, My Beauty)\, Mari Walker (See You Then)\, and Natalia Leite (Bare). \nThe Queer Cinema movement has been politically and aesthetically innovative\, growing to include an entire generation of queer artists\, filmmakers\, and activists. What does this look like in today’s landscape? How has onscreen representation evolved alongside our understanding of gender? How does identity intersect with art? Is there such a thing as a “Queer Aesthetic”? Filmmakers telling stories of unconventional queer romances discuss their films\, their creative process\, and various gazes.

SUMMARY:Language of Light Members
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales for a discussion about the Language of Light with cinematographers Nancy Schreiber (P-Valley)\, Rose Bush (Colette)\, and Vatsala Goel (Aggie). Moderated by Film Fatales member Chithra Jeyaram (Foreign Puzzle). \nWe heard from working cinematographers who are forging a path with their uniquely creative visions. We learned where they find inspiration\, how they cultivate their style\, and how they maintain it in the fast-paced and ever-changing landscape of the film industry. Do bold choices help you stand out or are they something you have to fight to hold onto? How do you maintain your artistic integrity? How do cinematographers like to communicate with directors? All these questions and more were answered!

SUMMARY:Accessible Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Members of Film Fatales and FWD-Doc gathered together for a private mixer for filmmakers of all genders\, disabilities\, and backgrounds. We met creative collaborators and shared details about our latest passion projects. \nMissing the company of like-minded artists? Curious about inclusive language and best practices? How do we break through barriers to share our stories with the world? How have each of us\, individually and collectively\, worked towards raising ourselves up\, and how do we bring others with us? This event was for you! We began with a group “getting to know you” exercise\, facilitated by Day Al-Mohamed (The Invalid Corps)\, Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp)\, and StormMiguel Florez (The Whistle) before dividing up into smaller discussion circles for meaningful conversations based on a series of guided prompts.

SUMMARY:Director's Intuition Members
DESCRIPTION:Revisit this interactive Directing Actors workshop with Judith Weston moderated by Film Fatales member Daniela De Carlo (The Blackout). For many filmmakers\, collaborating with actors is the last frontier—the scariest part and the part they long for—the human part\, the place where connection happens. Come witness legendary acting and directing coach\, Judith Weston\, school us on the challenges of the actor-director relationship\, the pitfalls of “result direction”\, how to break down a script\, how to prepare for casting sessions\, and when\, how\, or whether to rehearse. Judith’s students have included Alejandro G. Iñárritu\, (The Revenant\, Birdman) Ava DuVernay\, (When They See Us\, Selma)\, Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit\, Thor: Ragnarok) and Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek Picard\, The Flash).

SUMMARY:Director's Intuition

DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales\, Prism\, and Cinemarket hosted a Virtual Showcase and Showcase during the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. \nFilmmakers Emily Cohen Ibañez (Fruits of Labor)\, Raquel Cepeda (La Madrina: The Savage Life of Lorine Padilla)\, and Larissa Lam (Far East Deep South) shared their latest projects available for acquisition during the Cannes Film Festival and discuss their unique distribution journeys. This event was moderated by Concordia University professor Dipti Gupta. \nFilm Fatales\, Cinemarket\, and Prism came together to host PRISMA\, a virtual showcase and panel discussion to honor the work of filmmakers of all marginalized genders. What are the challenges women and gender nonconforming filmmakers face in finding distribution in Europe? Can we break down barriers between the international market and US-based filmmakers of color? Join us for a conversation about the state of the industry and explore the Virtual Market of feature films available for acquisition throughout the festival.\nThe Selection Committee included Alice Riva (Visions du Réel)\, Dayan Kodua (Actress)\, Francesca Tiberi (True Colours)\, Klaudia Malota (Lower Silesian Film Center)\, Lidia Damatto (More Than)\, Manuela Buono (Slingshot Films)\, Maral Mustafazade (Filmotor)\, and Rita Stanelyte (Litauisches Kino Goes Berlin\, Mata Hari Comm).

SUMMARY:From Shorts to Features Members
DESCRIPTION:Revisit a Film Fatales discussion about expanding a short into a feature film with Film Fatales members Cidney Hue (Ovum)\, Deb Shoval (AWOL)\, Erin Vassilopoulos (Superior)\, and Sonejuhi Sinha (Stray Dolls). \nThis round table discussion amplifies creative voices who have used their short films to support their feature work. Directors discuss how to use a short film as a “calling card” to find funding for the feature and build a creative team. We also address the logistical and creative challenges of expanding a short into longer form content. Do you write the feature first and shoot the first act? Do you write the short script and then expand? Learn how to take your short form content to the next level from filmmakers who have been there before.

SUMMARY:Going Paperless Members
DESCRIPTION:We hosted an interactive workshop about Going Paperless on set with Film Fatales member Valerie Weiss (Director of Mixtape\, Outer Banks\, and Prodigal Son). \nValerie discussed how Scriptation can empower you to navigate the new world of digital scripts\, shorter work days\, remote collaboration\, and social distancing without compromising your production workflow. Through a demonstration of the app’s tools like Note Transfer\, Script Annotation\, Bookmarking\, and Facing pages\, Valerie showed us how she uses Scriptation successfully on set. Watch the recording to gain insight into her process and see how she works within the new production safety guidelines. \nValerie first started using Scriptation four years ago when she was introduced to it by the cast of Scandal who were fans of the program because of its almost instantaneous notes transfer when new drafts of episodes arrived. Valerie adopted it immediately because of its vast functionality (annotating\, adding photo references\, and more)\, the positive effect on the environment by going paperless\, and the powerful way it increased communication with her department heads. Once the pandemic hit\, Valerie knew that Scriptation would be even more essential because of diminished physical contact in prep and production. Valerie has taught seminars on Scriptation to the Directors Guild of America\, the NBC Female Forward Program\, NYC Women Filmmakers and to the LA-based Saturday Sessions as well as industry-wide events for Scriptation. She will share the signature way she uses the app to direct her films and television episodes with enhanced creativity and productivity. \nParticipants received one complimentary month of Scriptation following the workshop.
