SUMMARY:Unconscious Bias Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining Film Fatales\, BIFA\, and Level Forward for a private workshop about Unconscious Bias led by Challenge Consultancy. This was a private workshop for current members of Film Fatales and invited guests of Level Forward was led by Femi Otitoju. \nThis interactive workshop covered how unconscious and ingrained biases (that is\, biases that we are not aware of) affect human decision-making day-to-day and how that might have an effect on the work we do in independent filmmaking. How does the human decision-making process work and what factors can influence it? Where can logical decision-making go wrong and lead us to illogical conclusions? What is an unconscious bias and what can we be unconsciously biased against? How can we recognize and mitigate against unconscious biases on a personal level and in group discussions? How does this affect our work in the film industry and what we can do to fix it?

SUMMARY:Work Life Balance Members
DESCRIPTION:Film Fatales hosted a discussion about Filmmaking While Parenting with feature film directors Débora Souza Silva (Black Mothers)\, Kestrin Pantera (Mother’s Little Helpers)\, and Renée Wilson (Crepe Covered Sidewalks). Moderated by Film Fatales member Tamara Perkins (Life After Life). \nThis round table discussion will feature filmmakers carving out new ways of building creative life while raising families. Each will share experiences and insight on reimagining creative space and opportunity for parent filmmakers to thrive. Questions that will be explored include: How can the film industry better support working parents? How do we as filmmakers work together to co-create spaces that include families\, respect the unique needs of parents on and off sets\, and see working parents as assets to projects and not liabilities? What role can policy change play in equalizing the industry for women and parents? How does self-care contribute to boosting morale\, mindfulness and sparking and sustaining creativity in working parents. How can we support each other more in this industry and what can filmmakers without kids do to make equitable spaces for their parenting colleagues a reality?

SUMMARY:Creating Your Own Work
DESCRIPTION:Revisit this discussion about Creating Your Own Work with episodic television and feature film writer/directors Isidora Marras (I Am Not Lorena) Jennifer Arnold (Shameless)\, Marta Cunningham (Fear The Walking Dead)\, Susan Youssef (Marjoun and the Flying Headscarf)\, and Vanessa Parise (Charmed). Moderated by Meera Menon (Equity). \nThis round table discussion explored how we support each other’s unique voices to create our own work. During Covid\, our group of director friends started a writing circle that has changed the way we approach our careers. We are working together to support each other’s unique voices\, to create truly individual and inspired work\, not the stories we’ve heard before. Covid has forced us to slow down. We’ve found a silver lining in creating a new space to delve deep and listen to our inner storytellers\, and help each other to tell our stories in the most impactful and engaging ways. As we develop our individual careers\, we believe success comes from working together.
