2023 Academy Awards
In the 95 year history of the Academy Awards, the Best Director nominations have gone to people named John three times as often as to women directors by any name. Despite the odds, we continue to advocate for systemic change in the years ahead and celebrate those with monumental achievements.
Three Film Fatales members were nominated this year in the Documentary categories: Sara Dosa for Best Documentary Feature, Fire of Love. Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy for Best Documentary Short, The Martha Mitchell Effect. Film Fatales member Olivia Peace presented the Student Academy Awards this year, which they won last year for Against Reality.
Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Sarah Polley won Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking, which she also directed, although no women were nominated for Best Director this year. Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman to win two Academy Awards for the Costume Design for Black Panther and Wakanda Forever.
Congratulations to everyone!
