Synopsis
I left my country of birth, the Dominican Republic, when I was 5 years old. My father stayed behind and tried to gain a foothold in Germany a few years later. But he left after a short time, missing his place of home. He seemed to miss too many things in cold Germany and even today, when he visits me here for a short period, I sense a strong melancholy in him. As if he always leaves a piece of his soul behind in his home country.
But my father's relationship with his own land is ambivalent. The land that he and his brothers inherited is the cause of a dramatic dispute that has led to them no longer speaking to each other.
I have never felt particularly connected to a country through my own biography. This disunity has shaped me and made me question where I truly belong. I believe it will be the same throughout my life. My childhood was characterized by traveling and moving. It's hard for me to imagine my father and his brothers fighting over little land (from my perspective). He is already over 70 and has dedicated his life to farming, but will probably no longer be able to work this land with his hands. What motivates him is to bequeath land to us daughters, land that will never have the same value for us as it does for him.
