Synopsis

Ladies Coffee, set mostly in the Arabic language is a Lovecraftian horror film that explores the lore of fortune-telling and coffee cup reading in Arabia. In typical Arab fashion and on the prowl for lady suitors, Roula invites Zeina and her daughter Reem over for an Arabic coffee matinee. When young Reem is encouraged to participate in a coffee cup reading ritual, she gets more than she bargained for. In true Lovecraftian fashion, the ritual goes awry – she can no longer uns-ee what she now sees; she can no longer un-hear what she now hears, and things will never be the same again.

Press

"Amal Al-Agroobi’s new short film packs a punch, changing the narrative around Western media’s depictions of Arab women, and exploring generational trauma through a traditional Syrian coffee cup reading"
