After nine-year-old Goni is targeted for outshining the boys on the soccer field, her brother leads her into the desert, where she learns the quiet cost of standing out in a world that wants her to disappear.
Goni is nine. She always runs faster than the boys. Always scores more goals. Until one day, they decide they’ve had enough. Her brother finds her in the yard, rinsing blood from her knees. He doesn’t ask anything. Just carries her into the desert. There, he teaches her how to defend herself among red rocks and wide silence. Fourteen minutes of quiet rupture, about the cost of being who you are, when that’s exactly what no one wants to see.
Sivan Levy Zakin is a filmmaker, composer, and actress. Her shorts Cherchez la Femme and Dina & Noel premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. Her recent short, LOSS, follows a girl navigating grief and gendered violence in a militarized landscape. Sivan scores her work with voice, piano and modular synths. She is currently developing her first narrative feature about how closeness becomes its own form of resistance, and a hybrid documentary exploring memory, absence, and matrilineal legacy.
