Synopsis
NEXT GENERATION SEX is a groundbreaking feature documentary that confronts the critical question: “Do kids have a right to knowledge about their own bodies and sexuality?”
Nationally mandated sex education has been a way to ensure all young people gain access to this information, but new sex education standards -- including LGBTQ+ inclusivity, gender identity, and frank discussion for younger kids -- have sparked a national firestorm. NEXT GENERATION SEX follows three New Jersey high school students who take matters into their own hands as they battle a growing parental rights movement trying to keep this information out of the schools. As opposing parents and politicians pressure their state to walk back new curricula, these students are on a mission to preserve what they believe is a fundamental right of all young people.
This film is urgent and timely - with brewing political divisions centering on trans kids and gender identity in schools and heated debates over what should be allowed in classrooms across the country. With the recent US election results, the stakes could not be higher.
Will parental rights groups ban sex ed? Will our young advocates succeed in protecting their rights to inclusive education? And ultimately, what are the stakes for young people if they don't have access to this critical information? Our film reveals the next generation’s fight to break beyond society’s fear and discomfort with sexuality and gender identity, to help shape what they value in society.
