Synopsis

PAULA (22, black) reconnects with her high school crush, SLOANE (22, white), on an errand. Sloane faces accusations of theft, prompting Paula to defend her and offer a getaway. Sloane stays over at Paula's house, where she confides her childhood abuse. In the wee hours, Paula’s pastor stepfather, CREON (50s, black), arrives home and Paula gets into an altercation with him. Sloane convinces Paula she’ll never be safe at her home, so they make a pact to run away together.

On the road, Paula’s tire blows. ANTHONY (20s, white), a mechanic and aspiring rapper, accidentally blows his brains out when trying to scare Paula and Sloane with his gun after giving them a deal on a new tire. Fleeing the scene, they drive all night. Sloane convinces Paula everything will be okay and they consummate their relationship. At a movie theater, Sloane's reckless behavior leads to a robbery and Paula stabs one of their robbers in the stomach trying to protect Sloane. Later, Paula discovers Sloane has taken the gun used in Anthony's death, adding to their complications on the road.

Paula initially tries to break-up with Sloane after a confrontation over the gun and Sloane's true motives for the road trip. However, they decide to stay together upon learning about the movie theater stabbing on the diner’s TV. They dispose of the vehicle and Paula insists that Sloane gets rid of the gun. Later, hippies offer them a ride, but Paula declines, opting to accompany Sloane to her father’s house on a bicycle. When they arrive, Paula hopess that Sloane won’t go through with “it”… then a gunshot. Sloane asks Paula to stay with her. Paula agrees to stay but backs away from Sloane, knowing what will happen when the cops arrive. Paula leaves Sloane alone and rides away on the bike to safety.
