Synopsis

Emily picks her daughter, Parker, up from school, and Parker sings her "La Cucaracha" the whole way home - a new song she's just learned.  As they pass a dance studio she used to frequent, Emily's heart races.  That night, Parker calls Emily "Cockroach" before drifting off to sleep, and Emily dreams of her former body.  Her morning routine leaves her frustrated, and at therapy she finds herself talking about her depression.  Later, attempting one-armed pushups, she falls flat on her face - and when she complains to her mother about it, she's told she needs to be strong for Parker.  She tells her husband about her day over dinner and erupts when he questions the validity of her feelings.  At bedtime, Parker asks what "La Cucaracha" is actually about, so Emily looks up the lyrics - it turns out to be about a cockroach who's lost a leg but keeps dancing anyway.  Emily thanks Parker and returns to dance class the next morning. There, a flashback to her accident and its aftermath nearly breaks her - but the women around her hold her up, and she loses herself in the music.

Bio

Mary Pat Bentel spent years helping other filmmakers find their voices—then her arm shattered, and she found her own. She took notes between surgeries and her directorial debut, THE COCKROACH, emerged. The projects she’s proudest of producing include Peabody-nominated and PGA award-winning THIS CLOSE, a series about best friends, who happen to be deaf; and feature films DARK WAS THE NIGHT, a family drama about loss; ANIMALS, a romantic drama about heroin addiction; and BOLD NATIVE, an action thriller about animal liberation. She's drawn to messy women navigating impossible situations—and plans to throw magical realism, action, and horror at them next.

Press

"When Emily looks in the mirror, she struggles to look at herself. Every reflection, in fact, bothers her–it doesn’t matter if it’s in her own bathroom or if it’s a casual glimpse in a dance class window. After a body-altering accident, she doesn’t see herself as whole, and she evades everyone’s gaze and question. The finale of Mary Pat Bentel’s film took my breath away. Our biggest fears and traumas can transform into our biggest triumphs, and seeing Emily declare her own path is unforgettable."
