Parity Pipeline

Untitled Amy Oden

Directed by Amy Oden

Running an anti-Hitler cabaret wasn’t what I imagined my immigrant grandparents doing before I was born, but the image is seared into my brain since finding my grandmother’s memoir. This hybrid feature documentary foregrounds the experiences of modern LGBTQ+ activists, media makers, and culture workers, while teasing out queer futurist fantasy vignettes from the real-life experiences of an anti-Hitler cabaret, tying the past to the present.

Synopsis

Through hybrid juxtaposition of interviews and fantasy narrative, we see how the story of the past overlays with the present moment.

Susan Stryker sets the stage, discussing art, LGBTQ+ community, and resistance. Simultaneously, we see vignettes and queer fantasies from the cabaret; what would have happened if the Nazi’s never raided it? Kyle Casey Chu, a drag artist who was targeted by the Proud Boys, and Madsen Minax, a queer filmmaker who focuses on collective history, are also featured centrally here.

The Nazis also summoned my blonde grandmother, asking her to leave her Jewish husband and baby, and become an Aryan poster child. She barely escaped. Digital sociologist Jaron Lanier and media critic Jack Halberstam discuss solidarity, truth in the era of social media, and cultural dominance, as we take in images reimagining her terrifying exchange.

My grandparents ultimately escaped, crossing the Adriatic to the dazzling spires of Istanbul. What does it mean to be safe? Public servants Sarah McBride and Andrea Jenkins, as well as Debi Jackson, a mother of a trans child who fled the United States, talk about sanctuary city legislation and representation within government, as well as the implications, privilege, and difficulties in migrating to safety.
