WATCH NIGHT-WATCH OUT A true story of legacy, hope and the will to be free.
A true family story begins in the fall of 1962 on the Walker plantation in Berrien (now Lowndes) County in South Georgia. This story was told in the early 1900s by Judy Kemp Walker to her grandchildren including Elijah, Hattie, Robert, Andrew and great granddaughters, Ella Mae Hall and Molly Walker. Slaves on the Walker plantation had heard rumors about their approaching freedom. Thomas, the son of the slave master, Newton and enslaved, Judy, is very angry because he is aware of plans to continue to take advantage of them. Newton feels intimidated by him because of his independence and intellect. A calm environment is maintained throughout the plantation by the enslaved matriarch, Patsy, who ultimately is the holder of all the secrets which she has kept buried in her secret garden for 31 years. In the mid- 1830s, Patsy’s children were sold and through the years, she was able to raise her niece, Judy, and would later assist her in the rearing her children. During this time, she gained access to the property's deed and will from the original owner. When new overseers moved onto the property, Patsy maintained these documents, continued to be docile and enjoyed working in her garden. On the eve of Emancipation, Patsy reveals all of the family’s secrets. This is how the Walker farm in Lowndes county Georgia was acquired by the family and is still owned and maintained by her progeny.
