Synopsis
ALL THE LIGHT WITHIN US is about Ann Fitzpatrick, a privateer, who discovers her husband James has turned "pirate catcher" for the British Crown. In a vengeful act of sabotage, Ann frees his prisoner, Captain Charles Berry—who is actually a woman named Charlotte in disguise. Their immediate, passionate bond leads them to seize a ship and flee toward Great Seal Island, Newfoundland. They are pursued not only by James but by a dark history. Twenty-two years earlier, a Spanish fisherman, Diego, stole the sealskin of a Selkie named Maeve, forcing her into a captive life in Ireland. Diego’s mother, Sofia—a Madrid apothecary who grinds human remains into "healing" powders—demanded the Selkie’s power. Maeve eventually murdered Diego and reclaimed her skin, but the trauma left Charlotte (who met Maeve as a youth) forever changed. Sofia, now a captain of a slave ship fueled by cannibalism, has spent decades hunting Maeve to avenge her son. On the desolate island, the past and present collide. Ann is captured by Sofia and held on a ship where she meets Arminta, a kidnapped Yoruban navigator. While Sofia and her partner Bob Murphy prepare to hunt the island’s seals, Arminta leads a revolt, liberating the enslaved Africans. On land, Charlotte is reunited with Maeve, who has followed her through the mist of time. When James attempts to execute Charlotte for piracy, Maeve intervenes with a bow and arrow, saving her lover. The climax erupts in the woods as Sofia finally confronts the Selkie. Before she can strike, Charlotte kills the Marquesa, ending the generational cycle of violence. As the liberated Africans take to the sea and Arminta claims her place as a free pirate, James rescues Ann and sinks the Spanish Galleon. He lies to Ann, claiming Charlotte is dead. However, the bond between the women remains unbroken. As winter descends, Maeve offers Charlotte a final, mystical transformation: "I am your skin." On the snowy beach, Ann, Charlotte, and Arminta all whisper the same vow across the water: "I will find you." Charlotte sheds her human life and slips into the ocean as a seal, finally escaping the reach of men and the shadows of the past.
