'At Second Glance' is a film about Kay and Falk, Benjamin and Elena, Till and Pan - three visually impaired couples in the big city juggernaut Berlin - who meet, discover and feel attracted to each other.
Kay, in her mid-thirties, was once an impulsive singer until a serious car accident, caused by her ex-fiancé Sebastian, left her blind and led to the end of their engagement. Since then, she has withdrawn from life in Berlin, avoiding close relationships and working only as a voice reading the news on a jazz radio station.
Falk, a widower and devoted single father to his eight-year-old daughter Carla, earns a living as a taxi driver. Carla deeply misses her late mother, while Falk embraces life with warmth and optimism. He has fallen in love with Kay’s voice, listening to her broadcasts whenever he can. One day, Kay unknowingly enters his taxi, but Falk is unprepared for her guarded and distrustful nature.
Pan was diagnosed with macular degeneration at the age of nine and is now severely visually impaired. He works as a piano tuner, lives alone with his dog Lilly, and finds comfort in classical music, especially Bach. Though content in many ways, he longs for a partner. His life intersects with Till, an antique shop owner specializing in African art, who lives with his partner Antje but suppresses his attraction to men and his desire for a different life.
Elena, a confident therapist with a dry sense of humor, works with blind and visually impaired patients. Ironically, she herself retains only two percent of her vision and lives in constant fear of losing it completely. She copes by denying her own vulnerability, until she meets Benjamin.
Benjamin has been completely blind since birth and grew up in a sheltered environment. After leaving it, he brought along his “gray friends,” imaginary companions who never leave his side. Their presence leads his employer to send him to therapy with Elena. As their sessions unfold, the line between who is helping whom begins to blur.
AT SECOND GLANCE is a quiet, layered love story about six people in Berlin whose lives intertwine as they search for connection, acceptance, and courage.
