Grasshopper
A coming-of-age, coming-of-place story on the Baltic island of Bornholm
A coming-of-age, coming-of-place story on the Baltic island of Bornholm
Loosely inspired by Aesop's fable and the grasshopper as a symbol in the arts for indolence, improvidence and creativity, GRASSHOPPER’s main character prefers to rest, observe, and explore rather than produce, despite the oncoming “winter” of climate change and military build-up in the Baltic.
Micah Magee grew up in a family of contemporary dancers. Her first education in world cinema was as programming and managing director of Cinematexas International Short Film Festival in Austin, Texas (under artistic director Athina Rachel Tsangari). In 2001, she was awarded a Fulbright Journalism Fellowship from Austin to Berlin. She stayed in Berlin to study film directing at the national German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). There she wrote, produced and directed a number of award-winning short films, winning fx the documentary short film award in Oberhausen for Krankenhaus and the German Academy Award (Short Film Lola in Gold) for Heimkommen in 2012. Her first fiction feature Petting Zoo - filmed back in Texas - premiered at the Berlinale Panorama in 2015 and picked up directing, acting, writing, audience, critics and ‘best film’ awards at international festivals before being exhibited on Netflix and in movie theaters. Micah also produces independent international films through Berlin production company / directors’ co-op Makrorama. Johan Carlsen’s experimental feature Death on the Streets, produced and co-written by Magee, premiered at IFFR in 2021. Haris Raftogiannis’ experimental documentary Aeralandi, co-produced by Magee, premiered at Thessaloniki in 2022. She is currently working on her sophomore fiction feature as director, in collaboration with Snowglobe Productions, with the support of the Danish Film Institute. Magee’s teaching engagements have included Temple, Harvard, the European Film College in Denmark, the Swedish Art Academy in Umeå, and the DFFB in Berlin.
