Florencia Manóvil (she/her) is a queer Latina indie writer-director based in Oakland, California, and a 2024 SFFILM FilmHouse Resident. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Manóvil moved to the US at age 18 to pursue film studies at Emerson College on an Honors scholarship. A San Francisco Bay Area resident since 2007, in 2015 she was named “Best Filmmaker of the East Bay” by the East Bay Express for her beloved Oakland web series DYKE CENTRAL, lauded by press and fans alike for its then-groundbreaking diverse representation of LGBTQ characters. DYKE CENTRAL screened at dozens of film festivals internationally, receiving a “Best Web Series” award along the way. It is currently streaming on Amazon. Manóvil is a two-time recipient of the Frameline Completion Fund. Other credits include FIONA’S SCRIPT (2009, 89m), ENCUENTRO (2017, 16m), SOLSTICE ( 2020, 36m), and FROM X TO Z (2022, 11m). Currently, Manóvil is developing three very different projects: “Star-Crossed”, a social justice-themed feature drama that was a finalist and won the pitch contest in the 2022 Cinequest Screenwriting Competition; “Queerly Beloved”, an ensemble wedding feature about the power and magic of queer community; and “Twelve”, a thrutopian limited series that is a finalist in the 2024 Writing Climate Pitchfest.
