Inspired by a classic fairytale Hansel and Gretel, H&G tells the story of two children forced to fend for themselves due to neglect and abandonment. Set in a contemporary rural landscape, the film is told through the eyes of eight year-old Gemma: a young girl struggling under the weight of adult responsibilities.
Celebrated for her female-driven stories, filmmaker DANISHKA ESTERHAZY is a graduate of the Directors’ Lab at the Canadian Film Centre, the Talent Lab at the Toronto International Film Festival, the National Screen Institute and Women in the Director’s Chair. Esterhazy’s films have screened in festivals and theaters around the world and have been broadcast on CBC, Bravo, Super Channel, Movie Central, Showtime and NetflixUK. In 2017, Esterhazy was awarded the Amazon Video Filmmaker Award at the Sundance Film Festival for her independent film Black Field. Her dystopian feature Level 16 premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2018 to excellent reviews. Level 16 also screened at FrightFest Glasgow, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, PanicFest and Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. In 2019, Esterhazy’s horror feature The Banana Splits Movie premiered at San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con before its broadcast release on SyFy and home video release by Warner Bros. In 2019, she also directed two episodes of the new female-driven science fiction series “Vagrant Queen” for Syfy – which will premiere in March 2020. Most recently, Esterhazy completed principal photography on the biopic I Was Lorena Bobbitt for Lifetime. A dual American and Canadian citizen, Esterhazy splits her time between Toronto and California.
