THE AUTOMAT is a documentary film that premiered at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival directed and produced by Lisa Hurwitz, with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Elliott Gould, Howard Schultz & Colin Powell about the one of the first and most unique restaurant chains in America.
Lisa Hurwitz is an emerging feature director and principal of A Slice of Pie Productions. Her first film, The Automat, premiered at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival and went on to be one of the highest-grossing documentaries of 2022 receiving nominations for four 2022 Critics Choice Documentary Awards including Best Feature Documentary and Best First Feature Director. It’s now streaming on HBO Max. Her next projects, a narrative romantic comedy set in Italy, Mammone, is currently in development and she is in production on a feature doc, Singles.
